Happy 1st Birthday!

Today is David’s first birthday. When I got him out of his crib this morning I gave him a big hug and told him the news. He didn’t seem to care that much, but then, he had things to do. There was cat food to spill, spoons to grab out of the dish washer and lick, cabinets to be cleared. Life is full when you are one.

David’s start in this world was, let’s be honest, pretty crappy. He came 5 weeks early, under 5 lbs, and unable to breath well on his own. His first two weeks were spent in the NICU at Fair Oaks hospital under the excellent care of their doctors and nurses.

It was six days before I could hold him for the first time, an experience I will never forget.

Then he came home, and the real fun started! He proved that his lungs were just fine, thank you very much, and he proved it loudly. For months. Almost six of them, to be exact. Thankfully he took breaks now and then to pose for some pictures with his brother, take baths, roll around on the floor. You know, baby stuff.

Sitting up opened a whole new world to him. He much preferred being able to see us, grab toys, grab the cat (a skill Max just loves!).

And then he learned to stand and play at the table, to cruise around the furniture, and to sneak his brother’s toys whenever possible.

From the beginning, it was clear that David had his own personality. He is very, um, “focused” on what he wants. He loves the water, he plays a great game of peek-a-boo, he likes peas and sweet potatoes, he loves to dance, he enjoys rolling a ball, and he is a pretty good shopper. He has a beautiful smile and a wonderful laugh and I think I am the luckiest person in the world that I get to see it every day.

Happy Birthday David!
