Four AM

What were you doing at 4 am? Sleeping?

Not us. We were up.

All of us.

At four in the morning.

David has had a cold for several days and he is having trouble sleeping. He was up for awhile in the middle of the night and finally fell asleep in the bed with me. Matthew woke up crying around 4 because he had a nightmare. This woke David, who thought 4 am was Morning! I tried, unsuccessfully to convince David to shush, but Matthew came in and there I was. Two boys, wide awake at 4 am.

Matthew wanted some company, but the bed was pretty full. He wanted Daddy. Daddy had fallen asleep on the couch watching TV.  I couldn’t really leave David, so we had a little parade down to the family room.

Daddy was a little confused when he woke up. Can you blame him? All I could explain was, “Matthew had a nightmare and needs you.” I got a groggy “Okaaaay,” before heading back up with David.

David was still convinced that It Was Morning! He rolled and kicked and babbled and played. I decided if he was that happy he could go be happy in his crib.

Some day we will look back on this and laugh.

Some day when we are better rested.
