Why the bathtub?

Last month I posted a rhetorical question to my mom’s group. Matthew had dumped the contents of my bathroom cabinet into the bathtub, and then proudly displayed his work. I was not happy. He was shocked. “But mommy, I thought you would like it.”

Why would he think I wanted him to do that? I asked. And my very wise friend Kelly, who has a son a few months older than Matthew, came up with some pretty good reasons. Well, pretty good if you are a three-and-a-half year old boy.

Reason #1 Matthew thought Mommy would like the contents of the bathroom cabinet in the bathtub: “Why does Mommy store her bath toys in this cabinet?  That’s no fun.  I’ll get them out so she can play with them!”

Reason #2 Matthew thought Mommy would like the contents of the bathroom cabinet in the bathtub:  “She might like having a better place to store David when he’s fussy.  This cabinet should work after I clear out a few things.”

Reason #3 Matthew thought Mommy would like the contents of the bathroom cabinet in the bathtub: “Mommy wouldn’t like me putting these things in the potty.  I’ll use the tub instead.”

At least I got a good laugh while I was putting it all back.
