Birthday Play Group

We had Matthew’s birthday play group yesterday afternoon. I decided a small gathering of friends at home was a good way to celebrate, so I invited an intimate group of thirty four people to our home. Surprisingly, it all went very well.

We decorated the house with streamers and helium balloons.

Although storms were predicted, it stayed dry for most of the party.  The kids splashed in the pool, played in the sand box, and jumped around on the swing set. When the sky threatened rain, I pulled out the cupcakes and we sang a quick round of “Happy Birthday.”

Matthew celebrated by taking off all his clothes.

He remained completely naked until he put on pajamas at bedtime. It did not bother him in the least that everyone else  was dressed. This says something about his essential nature, but I”m not going to dwell on what that is.

David ate every last bite of cupcake.

Matthew ate two.

Later in the evening, after most of the guests had left and pizza had been consumed, “disaster” struck. Matthew fell and hit his head. A very tired David objected to being put down so I could console his brother. I enjoyed a moment every mother understands,

soothing two miserable children while cheerfully thanking everyone for coming to celebrate our special day.

It was a great party, all in all. This morning, Matthew grabbed my hair to pull my face close to his and said, “Mommy, you are the best mommy in the whole world.”

34 people! You deserve a medal of honor. I can’t wait until Matthew starts coming home with girlfriends so you can show them all the embarrassing photos.
