Roanoke Island

We took a morning to go Roanoke Island and visit the colonial exhibit they have set up. There was an Indian village, a reproduction colonial ship, and a small colonial camp, all based on the first attempt to start a colony on Roanoke Island. The colonists made it about 10 months. We lasted about two hours, but we had a lot more fun.

On the boat.

Pumping out the bilge water.

Peeking out the window "below deck."

Firing the mini-cannon

Leaving no rope left un-yanked

Swabbing the deck (why won't they do this at home?).

Raising the anchor.

In the colonist's camp, we checked out the fire pit,

the captain's bed,

the captain's stash of liquor,

and the fancy wood carving machine.
