Home School

No, no, don’t get worried. I’m not home-schooling.

Matthew and David have been playing “school” at home lately, so I plowed through my stash of posters to see if there was anything the boys would enjoy.

There was.

I would have set things up a little differently, but the boys had a good time arranging their classroom.

I know their interest wont last more than a few weeks, but it’s kind of fun to watch.

Green Snack

On St. Patrick’s day, the kindergarten kids had to bring a green snack. I got out my fondant cutters and had a good time with some honey-dew and green grapes.

Like the pattern? Matthew is way into patterns these days. I doubt the fruit stayed in place, though.

He loved the “green star fruit.” He wanted more of it when he got home. I’m pretty sure he thinks it comes that way. He is in for some disappoint the next time we crack open a honey-dew.

Rainbow (Trout) Warriors

The boys went fishing a few weekends ago at Lake Fairfax. It gets stocked in the spring and Matthew was fortunate enough to catch his very first rainbow trout.

(Daddy helped a little)

Matthew suggested they bring it home and cook it, so they did. Daddy did all the cleaning and gutting (ewww! so gross) and pan-fried the fish for a pre-dinner appetizer.

This last picture I took just for Aunt Susie (who has a real fondness for cooked fish heads).

Matthew didn’t much care for the fish, but he loved the fish skin. David wanted to eat the mouth. We tried several times to explain that you can’t eat the mouth, but you can eat he cheeks. He didn’t care. He wanted what he wanted and he was mighty annoyed we didn’t give it to him.

How long do you think I can get away with avoiding fish cleaning duty?

Pet Shop Boy

Matthew’s class has a play center that changes themes during the year. This month it transformed into a pet shop/vet clinic for two weeks.

Two glorious weeks of playing pet shop owner/veterinarian! It was such fun we had to do it at home, too.

Some of our favorite (stuffed) pets.

Some of the cages we made for our pets.

The horse got his own stall.

Our store even has an alligator. Cool, eh?

The proud store owner.

Perhaps It was Dormant?

Matthew and David were playing an interesting mix of “house” and “pet shop” the other day. Matthew was the kitty. David was the Daddy. I overheard the following exchange.

Matthew: “Mew! Mew! Mew!”

David: “It’s OK kitty. It’s time to go to bed now.”

Matthew: “Mew! Mew!”

David: “Kitty, go night- nights”

Matthew: “Mew! Mew!”

David: “Kitty, do you hear something?”

Matthew” Mew! Mew!”

David: “It’s ok, kitty. Don’t worry. It’s just a volcano.”

Erin Go Marshmallow!

In honor of our Irish heritage, we broke out the marshmallows for a little project.

Matthew enjoyed putting some of them sideways.

David colored with his right hand and glued the marshmallows with his left. He likes to keep us guessing.

Story Time

Two washed, dried, and freshly pressed boys enjoyed some stories with Grandpa.

Will Nap Anywhere

David is giving up his naps, but sometimes, especially if we get in the car in the late afternoon, a nap overtakes him. Such was the scene on Wednesday afternoon. We headed to the Y for Matthew’s swim lesson around 4 pm. David fell asleep on the way there. He stayed asleep as I unbuckled him from his car seat. And he stayed asleep all the way

through swim lessons.

(Until I woke him up. Naps are all well and good, but bedtime is sacred.)

Happy Birthday, Grandma!

We celebrated Grandma’s birthday over Skype yesterday. The boys got a chance to sing “Happy Birthday.” Yeye’s new version of skype captured a cute picture of the boys.

A Change of Pace

Instead of one of the boys sick on the couch, today it was ME sprawled out watching TV, kleenex box on the floor, cup of tea next to me.

Being sick and being the Mommy is not fun.

PS – I still did the usual “mom” stuff – like drop-offs, and pick-ups, and meals, and swim lessons. But I draw the line at putting away the laundry.
